What is my IP address?
Your public IP address is the unique number that identifies your connection on the internet. Every site you visit sees this address, and it is how responses find their way back to you. This page detects your public IP automatically and enriches it with geolocation, your ISP and the ASN of the network you are on.
Note the difference between your public and private IP. The address shown here is your public IP — assigned by your internet provider and visible to the outside world. Your private IP (often something like 192.168.x.x) is used only inside your home or office network and is not shown to websites.
What your IP reveals
- —Your approximate location — typically your city and country, based on your ISP's network.
- —Your Internet Service Provider — the company that supplies your connection.
- —Your ASN — the network identifier your ISP uses on the global routing table.
- —Whether you are using a VPN or proxy — if the location or ISP looks unfamiliar, your traffic may be routed through one.
Why check your IP?
Checking your IP is useful for confirming that a VPN is active and masking your real address, for troubleshooting network or gaming connectivity, for whitelisting your address with a service, and for verifying what location websites think you are in.
If you value privacy, remember that your public IP is visible to every site you visit. A reputable VPN replaces it with the VPN server's address, changing both the IP and the apparent location that tools like this one report.
